RECAP THE MADNESS The LHS Library hosted a March Madness competition for students and faculty. They entered the library to fill out men's and/or women's NCAA basketball brackets. Mrs. McCoy printed large brackets, filled them in as the tournament progressed, and kept up with how many game outcomes people got correct. She sent out the leaderboard each day. Mrs. McCoy also displayed basketball books for students to check out. Our final winners in the men's bracket were: Brett Williams (1st), Officer Grantham and Ryker Loprinzi (2nd), and Mrs. Bautista and Connyr Leary (3rd). Our final winners in the women's bracket were: Ms. Bush (1st), Ms. L. Smith (2nd), and Ella Covington and Ryker Loprinzi (3rd). Prizes included t-shirts, hats, signed posters, cups, notebooks, umbrellas, portable speakers, and lanyards. Thank you to the colleges that donated prizes (University of MS, Mississippi State, Iowa State, Michigan State, and LSU).

TASTY 3D SHAPES Ms. Monroe’s 1st grade class explored 3D shapes in a fun and tasty way. With help from generous parent volunteers, students sorted snacks shaped like cones, cylinders, and rectangular prisms, then discussed each shape’s attributes, including edges, vertices, and faces. Hands-on learning has never been so sweet!

Celebrating Excellence in Community Engagement Congratulations to Dr. Kelle Sumrall and Mrs. Lindsay McGregor, science teachers at LMS, for receiving the 2025 Excellence in Community Engagement Award with Distinction from the University of Mississippi’s Office of Community Engagement! Each year, this prestigious honor is awarded to only two projects recognized for outstanding community collaboration and impact. Dr. Sumrall and Mrs. McGregor have partnered with Dr. Joe Sumrall and his EDCI 320/520 class at Ole Miss for the past four years, engaging in dynamic, project-based learning experiences that benefit both K-12 and college students. Thanks to the Community Partnership Development Fund Grant, their students have explored science through hands-on projects like rocket launches, raised garden beds, bird and hummingbird feeders, and even earthworm farms. With support from local organic farmers, 7th-grade students have also grown their own produce and flowers. We are incredibly proud of Dr. Sumrall and Mrs. McGregor for their dedication to innovative science education.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE The sixth-grade student council has been very busy making a difference at school and in the community. This week, they held a ribbon-cutting for their Pantry Program, also known as The Snack Shack—a place where students can grab a snack when needed. They spent some of the money raised to buy snacks and learning how to work with a budget. Students can also contribute by helping stock the cabinet if they choose. This program is all about giving back. Also this week, the student visited Beau Ridge Community Center, where they stuffed Easter eggs, participated in a jazzercise workout, and visited many of the residents.
