Students across campus have enjoyed dress-up days, mystery readers, and special guest readers who helped make the love of reading even more exciting.
Students in Mrs. Quarles’ and Mrs. Hinshaw’s 4th grade classes were excited to welcome special guest readers Mrs. Whitney Pullen and Mrs. Laura Carr, who are also moms of students in the class. Thank you for taking time out of your day to read with our students and support our school!
Students in Mrs. Chrestman’s 5th grade class also enjoyed welcoming Captain Dyer as a guest reader this week as part of the celebration.
We appreciate the families and community members who helped make Read Across America Week so special for our students!

Today, we recognize Maintenance Worker Appreciation Day and the individuals who work behind the scenes each day to keep our schools running smoothly. Thank you to Ben Shackelford, Andy Paul, Rusty Pinion, and Billy Pegues (not pictured) for the hard work and care you put into supporting our students, staff, and facilities. We appreciate all that you do for our district!

The fun is still going strong at LES as we celebrate Read Across America Week! Students have been enjoying dress-up days, special guest readers, and plenty of time to celebrate the love of reading.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this week special for our students. We love seeing our Commodores celebrate the joy of reading!

Our students wrapped up their very own Winter Olympic Games during PE. Events included bobsledding, curling, hockey, mogul skiing, ski jumping, snowboarding, speed skating, and even a torch relay.

The day before Valentine’s Day, students in Ms. Liberti, Ms. Bruno, and Ms. Pittman’s classes enjoyed a fun “Blind Date with a Book.”
They explored key elements of a novel in a creative way to build literacy skills and encourage a love of reading.

Published in an International Science Journal
We are proud to share that Whitby Holden, LUES 6th grade teacher, has had a graduate school manuscript published in an international science journal.
“The Science of Butterflies: Science Is More Than a One-Hour Lesson in a 3rd Grade Classroom!”
By Whitby Holden, Joe Sumrall & Maddie Derito
This work highlights how meaningful, hands-on science learning extends far beyond a single classroom lesson. We are incredibly proud of Ms. Holden for representing LUES and our district in the world of science education!

Thank you to the Oxford Garden Club for visiting Mrs. Porter’s 1st grade class and helping students make bird feeders. Our first graders are taking them home to help feed the birds and share a little kindness in their own backyards!

Thank you for your commitment to excellence and for continually moving our district forward.
During School Board Member Recognition Week, we proudly thank our Board for their leadership and commitment to our district. Through their guidance, families have received support with student school supplies, teachers have benefited from increased local supplements, and our district has maintained strong, sound finances. Their vision has driven growth in career and technical programs, supported instructional coaches and a resource coordinator, and ensured continued academic excellence as an A-rated district with a rising graduation rate. From major facility improvements—including a new field house, building upgrades, Promethean boards, sound systems, and new buses—to investing in the future of our students and staff, their work continues to move our schools forward.
