Hands-On Science in Ms. Shelby & Mrs. Flowers’ Classroom

Ms. Shelby and Mrs. Flowers' class incubated and hatched 8 chicks over a 21-day period. The students observed each stage of the life cycle firsthand. From watching the eggs develop to holding the newly hatched chicks, this hands-on experience sparked curiosity, questions, and excitement for everyone involved.

Kaidee Davis was the winner of Mr. Kyzar’s annual 3rd grade March Madness reading bracket! Students competed by answering questions from state practice tests as they prepare for upcoming assessments.

Kaidee stood out not only for her accuracy but also for clearly explaining her thinking, eliminating incorrect answer choices, and referring back to the text.

She earned a well-deserved reward with lunch from Chick-fil-A!

LUES has had a wonderful week celebrating Read Across America!

Students across campus have enjoyed dress-up days, mystery readers, and special guest readers who helped make the love of reading even more exciting.

Students in Mrs. Quarles’ and Mrs. Hinshaw’s 4th grade classes were excited to welcome special guest readers Mrs. Whitney Pullen and Mrs. Laura Carr, who are also moms of students in the class. Thank you for taking time out of your day to read with our students and support our school!

Students in Mrs. Chrestman’s 5th grade class also enjoyed welcoming Captain Dyer as a guest reader this week as part of the celebration.

We appreciate the families and community members who helped make Read Across America Week so special for our students!

Published in an International Science Journal

We are proud to share that Whitby Holden, LUES 6th grade teacher, has had a graduate school manuscript published in an international science journal.

“The Science of Butterflies: Science Is More Than a One-Hour Lesson in a 3rd Grade Classroom!”
By Whitby Holden, Joe Sumrall & Maddie Derito

This work highlights how meaningful, hands-on science learning extends far beyond a single classroom lesson. We are incredibly proud of Ms. Holden for representing LUES and our district in the world of science education!

LUES 6th Grade Visits the Grammy Museum Mississippi

Our 6th grade music students recently visited the Grammy Museum Mississippi in Cleveland, MS, where they enjoyed hands-on activities and explored the musical legacies of B.B. King and Elvis Presley. Students also learned why Mississippi is home to one of only two Grammy Museums in the world before taking a self-guided tour through the exhibits. It was an inspiring opportunity to celebrate the rich history of music!
