Celebrating Excellence in Community Engagement Congratulations to Dr. Kelle Sumrall and Mrs. Lindsay McGregor, science teachers at LMS, for receiving the 2025 Excellence in Community Engagement Award with Distinction from the University of Mississippi’s Office of Community Engagement! Each year, this prestigious honor is awarded to only two projects recognized for outstanding community collaboration and impact. Dr. Sumrall and Mrs. McGregor have partnered with Dr. Joe Sumrall and his EDCI 320/520 class at Ole Miss for the past four years, engaging in dynamic, project-based learning experiences that benefit both K-12 and college students. Thanks to the Community Partnership Development Fund Grant, their students have explored science through hands-on projects like rocket launches, raised garden beds, bird and hummingbird feeders, and even earthworm farms. With support from local organic farmers, 7th-grade students have also grown their own produce and flowers. We are incredibly proud of Dr. Sumrall and Mrs. McGregor for their dedication to innovative science education.

ART COLLABORATION Ms. Amy’s 2nd-grade artists from Ms. Holcomb’s class at LES dreamed up their very own Squishmallow characters on paper. Then, the talented students in Mrs. Patton’s Art 2 class at LMS took those designs and worked their magic—turning them into real 3D Squishmallows using felt and other fun materials! The middle schoolers made a special trip to LES to personally deliver each custom-made Squishmallow to its proud 2nd-grade designer. This heartwarming collaboration is a perfect example of how art connects us across grades and campuses.

LMS Student Council’s Inspiring Spring Leadership Trip Our LMS Student Council recently embarked on a leadership trip to Jackson, MS! This journey was filled with history, inspiration, and fun as students explored key landmarks and learned from remarkable figures. Mississippi Museums – We had the honor of hearing from Hezekiah Watkins, the youngest Freedom Rider imprisoned at just 13 years old, sharing his powerful story of resilience and courage. Students explored fascinating exhibits showcasing the state’s diverse wildlife and ecosystems at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science. Brent’s Diner – A delicious lunch at this historic spot, famous for its appearance in The Help. Mississippi Governor's Mansion – A guided tour gave us insight into the state’s rich political history. DEFY Trampoline Park & Shaggy’s on the Rez – Leadership and learning wrapped up with team bonding and fun! This trip was an incredible experience, reinforcing the values of leadership, history, and community.
